Anusara Yoga

A very recent form of yoga, it is very likely that you have never heard of it.

Taken from the sacred text Kularnava Tantra, the word anusara means “to meditate with grace, to be in the flow and to listen to one’s heart.”

An Anusara yoga session can be reminiscent of a mix of Vinyasa yoga and Jivamukti yoga.

It traditionally begins with a time of meditation to reconnect with oneself followed by mantra chanting.

Then comes the sequence of asanas where breathing synchronized with the movements and precise alignment are key, reminiscent of Iyengar yoga.

Each session ends with a moment of relaxation.

The Anusara yoga philosophy is based on keeping positivity outside of the yoga studio and the Tantric belief that goodness is innate in each of us.

Texts / reference person: John Friend, a yogi since he was 13, founded Anusara yoga in 1997 in the United States. An Iyengar yoga teacher and financial analyst, he resigned from his position to devote himself to teaching yoga full-time. The Anusara school of Hatha Yoga was founded in 2012, a year also marking the departure of the master following scandals and the dissolution of Anusara Inc.

Intensity: Close to Hatha yoga and Vinyasa Yoga, Anusara Yoga is accessible to everyone.
