Nidra Yoga, which can be translated as yogic sleep or modified state of consciousness, is the yoga of deep relaxation.
A typical Nidra Yoga session begins with a few breathing postures to initiate relaxation. The student then settles into shavasana (corpse pose) and remains lying on the ground for the duration of the session.
The teacher guides the rotation of consciousness, an exercise during which each part of the body is named and to which attention is consciously directed in order to relax it.
The resting state of the body is such that a Yoga Nidra session would be equivalent to a 2-hour sleep cycle!!
Some of its aspects such as the rotation of consciousness and gentle induction by the teacher are found in sophrology and Ericksonian hypnosis.
Texts / reference person: Yoga Nidra owes its authorship to Swami Satyananda Saraswati, Indian spiritual master.
He drew his inspiration from the Upanishads to create this unique method of meditation-relaxation, which he systematized in 1956.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati is also the author of numerous works such as Yoga Nidra, Tantric Meditations, Sun Salutation.
His reputation has been tarnished by scandals linked to sex crimes.
Intensity: No physical intensity but rather an effort to let go and let yourself be guided by the teacher.
In summary: relaxation, relaxation and more relaxation
Equipment: a good soft mat that will comfortably support your spine and neck during the session. For even more comfort, you can slide a flat cushion or folded towel under your head and a bolster under your knees.
For who ? : For all those who suffer from insomnia, who feel stressed and tired, Nidra Yoga will allow release and deep relaxation to finally find calm.
