Trademark registered by its founder, Bikram Yoga is the most popular form of Hot Yoga like Forrest yoga, Power Yoga, TriBalance Yoga and Moksha Yoga.
It is practiced in an overheated and humid room like its native India (40.6°C with a humidity of 40% to be precise), artificially increasing the flexibility of the body.
The highly codified session lasts 90 minutes and consists of a series of 26 postures repeated twice and held for 1 minute, and 2 breathing exercises.
The postures are always the same from one session to the next and always performed in the same order. At the end of a Bikram Yoga session, there is only one desire: to drink then sleep.
Texts / reference person: Created by Bikram Choudhury in the early 1970s in California, we love this form of yoga (like Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and other American stars) or we hate it, as evidenced by the wrath of critics that the Bikram yoga knew how to provoke. First of all, practicing Bikram yoga could be dangerous with risks of heart attacks, dehydration or injuries. Then, many criticize Bikram yoga for being devoid of any spirituality. Finally, Bikram Choudhury was accused of sexual abuse against some of his students. Ommmm…oops!
Intensity: Due to the conditions mentioned above, this type of yoga is very physically intense.
In summary: heat, sweat, release of steam, endurance
Equipment: Dress your body in the lightest and most decent outfit possible, such as a bra and shorts. You will need your water bottle for after-session and a towel to dry yourself off.
For who ? : Bikram Yoga is aimed at people who want to build muscle and/or lose weight. It would also be beneficial to people suffering from chronic back pain. Pregnant women and people with heart problems refrain!
Video: It's difficult to make you experience heat and humidity digitally but this video will give you a first glimpse of what Bikram yoga is as well as a little tip to help you start sweating quickly
